Car battery care in the UAE: habits that add months
Simple car battery maintenance for UAE conditions: driving habits, parking, long trips away, terminal checks, and how to dispose of an old battery properly.
You cannot stop a battery ageing in UAE heat, but you can avoid shortening its life. Drive the car long enough to recharge it, keep it out of direct sun where you can, avoid running accessories with the engine off, and have the battery tested from about two years old. Most modern car batteries are sealed and need no topping up.
Everyday habits
- Give the car a longer continuous drive regularly; a string of five-minute trips takes more out of the battery than it puts back.
- Switch off lights, air conditioning and audio before you switch off the engine, and do not sit with them running on battery power.
- Park in shade or a covered bay when there is a choice.
- Unplug dash cameras, chargers and trackers that draw power while parked, or ask whether they are wired correctly.
- Have the battery tested before summer and before long journeys.
Leaving the car while you travel
A parked car is never fully off: alarms, keyless entry and control units draw a small current that can flatten a healthy battery in a few weeks, and sooner in heat. For a long absence, ask someone to drive the car for half an hour every week or two, or ask us about a suitable maintenance charger if your parking space has power.
Do not disconnect the battery on a modern car without checking the manual first. Some vehicles lose settings or need procedures on reconnection.
What you can check yourself
- The battery is held firmly and does not move in its tray.
- The terminals look clean, with no white or green deposits.
- The case is not swollen, cracked or damp.
- The date code or purchase invoice, so you know its age.
Leave cleaning corroded terminals, tightening clamps and any work on a damaged battery to a technician. Battery acid is corrosive, and a spark near a battery can ignite the hydrogen it gives off.
Disposing of an old car battery
Lead-acid batteries contain lead and sulphuric acid and must not go in household or building waste. They are also highly recyclable. When we fit a replacement, ask us to take the old battery away. If you have one at home, hand it to a battery retailer, workshop or an approved recycling point.
Quick answers
If your situation is different, tell us what happened when you last tried to start the car.
Do I need to top up my car battery with water?
Most batteries sold today are sealed and maintenance-free, so no. Only older serviceable designs with removable caps need the level checked, and that is best done by a technician.
How often should I have my car battery tested in the UAE?
Once a year from about two years old is sensible, ideally before summer, plus after any jump-start or long period parked.
What should I do with my old car battery?
Do not put it in general waste. Ask the technician to remove it when the new one is fitted, or take it to a battery retailer, workshop or approved recycling facility.
